What are top, heart and base notes?

Read the note pyramid as a descriptive map rather than a strict stopwatch.

What are top, heart and base notes?SOUQ SMELL JOURNAL

Top notes describe an opening impression, heart notes the composition's centre and base notes its more persistent foundation. Perfume does not always behave like three separate boxes opening in order. Notes can overlap, and people may perceive different associations in the same fragrance.

If a brand lists only key notes, do not invent a three-level pyramid. A note list is also separate from an ingredient or allergen declaration. Compare the six product descriptions below to see notes in different structures. Recording the opening and the later overall impression separately can be more useful than memorising the pyramid without actually wearing the perfume.

How to explore this edit

The recommendations below offer a comparison rather than one ranking. Open a candidate, read its notes in your chosen language and test the direction that interests you on skin. Sharing a note does not mean two perfumes smell the same.
